Vegetable prices start reducing as supply improves

The prices of all kinds of vegetables and fruits in the market were abnormal throughout the last week due to the disruption of the supply of products in the capital Dhaka in the wake of quota reform movement. Some vegetables were sold at more than double the price. However, due to the relaxation of curfew and normal movement of goods vehicles from last Wednesday, the prices of vegetables and fruits have started to decrease in the market.

The prices of all kinds of daily essential vegetables including green chillies, eggs were unusual in the market. However, at the end of the week, the prices of most of the vegetables that came to the market on Friday decreased. Apart from this, the prices of farm eggs, broiler chickens, fish and chicken have also decreased.

According to the consumers and government officials, increasing the price by Tk 5 to Tk 10 per kilogram in the market, rice is being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 80 per kg depending on the variety and quality of the rice. 

While visiting different kitchen market in the capital including Agargaon, Karwan bazar kitchen market, Shyamoli and Kalyanpur this corresponent found that last week, in some places of the capital, green chillies were sold at the price of Tk 400 to Tk 500 per kg. The farm chicken's red eggs were sold at Tk 180 to 190 per dozen. Apart from this, the prices of almost all types of vegetables including tomato, brinjal, cucumber, palol, dhundal, snake gourd (chichinga), Kidney beans (barbate), bitter gourd, kakrol were much higher than normal.

This correspondent talked to a private employee named Nayan Sarkar who came to buy vegetables in West Agargaon on Friday. He said, "Last week the green chilli was Tk 400 per kg, I bought it for Tk 180 per kg on Friday. The price of eggs has also decreased slightly."

He said that the sellers are selling the some vegetables including palol, cucumber at lower prices than those were in the last week.

On this day, a vegetable seller Billal Hossain told the Daily observer that last week the vegetables were sold at the rate of Tk 150 to Tk 180 per kg. Last week there was no vegetable bellow Tk 100. And this week the prices of all kinds of vegetables including green chilli, brinjal, cucumber, palol, gourd have decreased.

He said, "Last week I bought green chilli at the price of Tk 420 per kg. And it has reduced to Tk 180. I bought eggs for Tk 180 a dozen last week, I bought them for Tk 155 a dozen on Friday." 

On Friday, tomato was sold at Tk 180 to Tk 200, bitter gourd Tk 100 to Tk 110, Usta Tk 90 to Tk 100, round eggplant Tk 90, long eggplant Tk 60, kakrol Tk 70, cucumber Tk 40 per kg. Jhinga, Chichinga, Dhundal at Tk 50 to Tk 60, Barbati Tk 80 to Tk 90, Potol at Tk 50 to Tk 60, green papaya at Tk 40 to Tk 50, Potato at Tk 60 to Tk 65 per kg. Lemons (medium size) are sold for Tk 20 to Tk 30 a set of four. Small pumpkin (per piece) is being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 70.

Abdur Razzak Howladar, a vegetable seller in Shyamli, said that the prices of all kinds of vegetables, and eggs increased abnormally last week due to the quota movement. This week prices have dropped to near normal. 

He also said that mainly because of the disruption of supply due to the quota movement, the price of vegetables in the market had increased. On Friday, local onion was sold at Tk 120 to Tk 130, garlic at Tk 240 to Tk 250, ginger at Tk 320 to Tk 340 per kg.

On this day, Pabda fish at Tk 450 to Tk 500 per kg, sing at Tk 440 to Tk 550, tengra at Tk 555 to Tk 600, shrimp medium at Tk 700 to Tk 750 per kg. appears to be Medium size tilapia, pangas and silver carp are being sold at around Tk 250 to Tk 300 per kg.
