KAMALGANJ, MOULVIBAZAR, Aug 1: Due to necessary manpower crisis, 50-bed Kamalganj Upazila Health Complex in Kamalganj Upazila of the district is running in a trailing manner.

The 31-bed health complex was promoted to 50-bed one on March 10 in 2018. It was opened by the then health minister, Mohammad Nasim. But necessary manpower for the 50-bed capacity was not increased.

At present, doctors of Outdoor and Indoor are hiccupping to treat patients.

Over four lakh people are dependent on that hospital for treatment.

There are four doctors against granted 14 ones, two consultants against granted four, and nine medical assistants against 12 in the hospital; one man is working against granted two in the library.

There are four pharmacists against granted four while seven men are working in the delivery section.

Despite anaesthesia consultant available, the Operation Theatre (OT) cannot be operated due to lack of manpower; OT tools are damaging.

In 2013, Digital X-ray Machine was supplied to the health complex, ECG Machine in 2020 and Digital Ultrasonography Machine was supplied in 2014.

These machines cannot be operated due to lack of technicians (sonolist/radiographer).

The hospital has only one ambulance.

On an average, 200-300 patients are treated in the Outdoor daily; healthcare services are provided through 25 community clinics and three sub-centres at the field level.

On condition of anonymity, one doctor said, "We have to provide service to patients facing many troubles; in place of 14 doctors, we, four ones, are giving services."

"We have to work for additional time," he added.

Guardians Sadek Mia, Kamal Ahmed, and Popi Aktar Dolly said, due to lack of technicians, tests of diseases cannot be done; necessary tests are done in private centres at higher costs; medicine supply is not regular; medicines are purchased from the outside; and diabetics medicines remain unavailable for eight months in a year.

"We are poor; we can't purchase medicine," they added.

They further said, ward bathrooms are not regularly cleaned, and there garbage heaps behind the health complex.

Kamalganj Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Mohammad Mahbubul Alam Bhuiyan said, necessary manpower for 50-bed hospital was not appointed.

"We have four pharmacists out of total granted four; no nurse problem; but the problem is lying with MBBS and specialised doctors," he added.

"Despite the manpower crisis, we are trying sincerely to provide maximum treatment services to patients," he added.
He further said, letter has been sent to the authorities concerned for appointing technicians (sonolist/radiographer) to run X-Ray, ECG, and Digital Ultrasonography machines.

Medicines will arrive soon, the official maintained.
