KAPTAI, RANGAMATI, Aug 2: Cashew nut cultivation is on the rise in No. 2 Raikhali Union under Kaptai Upazila of the district. Local farmers are seeing enormous possibility in farming cashew nut there.

Cashew nut and coffee farming began in various unions of the upazila in 2021 with the supervision of Kaptai Upazila Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) under Cashew nut and Coffee Research, Development and Extension project. Till now, the plants have been cultivated on about 30 hectors of land in the upazila.

A commercial cashew nut orchard has also been established at Karigarpara Block in No. 2 Raikhali Union. A total of 10 farmers have been cultivating about 7,000 cashew nut of M-23 variety on 50 acres of land. Flowers have come in about 5,000 trees in three years after plantation. Of these, fruits were seen in about 4,500 trees. Upazila DAE opened four solar deep irrigation systems and water pipe lines for the orchard. With water tanks and pipelines, the plants are being irrigated.

Angsui U Marma and Sajai Pru Marma, farmers of the orchard, said, "We did not expect the success in cashew nut farming. With regular supervision of the Upazila DAE, we expect that the cultivation will increase the next year."

Upazila Agricultural Officer Md Imran Ahmed said, cashew nut cultivation has an enormous possibility in the hilly areas of Kaptai. As the fruits are nutritious enough and the cultivation suits on the hilly soil, cashew nut farming becomes popular in the upazila day by day. By arranging training programmes and setting-up exhibitions, farmers have been provided with proper assistance under the running project of the DAE.
