A large section of the country's artistes demanded the disclosure of the exact number of people killed in the quota reform movement, an investigation and trial of the killings under the supervision of the United Nations (UN), and the resignation of the government acknowledging responsibility for the killings.

Hundreds of artistes and ordinary people, under the banner of 'Shilpi Samaj against Genocide and Oppression', made this demand in front of Abahani Ground in Dhanmondi on Friday.

From the rally, they demanded three points and announced a programme for Saturday to organise a musical event at Rabindra Sarobar in Dhanmondi at 3 pm.

Ignoring the drizzling rain, many ordinary citizens, including visual artistes, photographers, performance artistes, musicians, poets, writers, researchers, architects, and art organisers, participated in the rally.

The artistes painted red protest paintings on long canvases of the killing scenes and performed a painfully emotional piece of performance art titled "Astha-Anastha".

Hundreds of people on the streets spontaneously participated in this protest. As different people joined the programme, it eventually turned into a long human chain.

Even though the police were deployed around, they did not try to disrupt the event.
Artistes sang songs, recited poems, and chanted slogans.

Women's leader Farida Akhter said that hundreds of innocent people were brutally killed. After independence, such a large number of killings have not happened in the country. The government should resign, taking responsibility.

Sharmin Murshid, leader of the non-governmental organisation Brati and Utrasuri, said these young students have taught us to be brave and to speak out for equal rights.

"People from all walks of life should join this path so that their self-sacrifice does not go in vain. This movement should continue until democracy is established in the country," she said.

Author Rehenuma Ahmed said that, so far, from different sources, we have come to know that 212 people were killed in the recent countrywide massacre. But the actual number of murders is much higher than that.

"We demand an impartial investigation under the supervision of the United Nations to identify the exact number of victims and the killers," Rehnuma said.

Their three points are to stop mass arrests and the filing of false cases and to immediately release the detained students.

To restore the educational environment in all educational institutions by removing law enforcement agencies from different campuses and the immediate resignation of the government for the killings of people.

Among the participants were photographer Imtiaz Alam Baig, artistes Shehzad Chowdhury, Amirul Rajeev, painter Kazi Tahsin Agaz Apoorva, Nuzhat Tabassum Anon, Asit Roy, musician Bithi Ghosh, Krishnakali, photographer Mehbooba Mahjabeen Hasan, archivist Reesham Shahab, and many others who participated in the programme.

At the end of the rally, the programme concluded with a procession through Satmasjid Road and went to Dhanmondi Road Number 27.
