A local Awami League (AL) leader was hacked to death during a clash with protesting students in Barishal city on Sunday.
Deceased Tutul Chowdhury was the former president of ward No.12 Awami League unit under Barisal metropolis. Sheikh Dipu, the current General Secretary of the ward AL unit, confirmed his identity.
According to locals, several clashes ensued between the protesters and AL and Chhatra League activists present at Karim Kuthir area of the city. During the clashes, Tutul was struck with sharp weapons and bricks, resulting in severe injuries.
He was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Confirming the death, an on-duty doctor of the hospital Dr. ASM Sayem said Tutul sustained sharp weapon injuries to his head, resulting in severe bleeding and exposure of internal parts of the skull.
The injuries and subsequent blood loss led to Chowdhury's death, he added.
This violent incident has escalated tensions in the area, prompting increased security measures by law enforcers.
