Heavy rainfall floods 200 villages in Cox's Bazar

COX'S BAZAR, Aug 4: Over 200 villages were flooded in Chakaria, Pekua, Ramu, Sadar and Ukhiya upazilas of the district while more than three lakh people were marooned due to heavy rainfall and upstream hilly water. 

Local administration and public representatives said, non-stop raining since Monday (July 29) inundated 16 unions in nine upazilas; water entered localities breaking embankments of river and canals.

Water of the Matamuhuri and Bankkhali rivers is flowing above danger marks; people of submerged houses went to shelter centres. Relief did not reach the  victim people. 

Mayor of Chakaria Municipality Alamgir Chowdhury said, hilly tide current broke the Matamuhuri River embankment at 10 points; water is continuing to enter localities speedily through the broken points; new areas are getting inundated.

Dwellers of adjacent areas of the Matamuhuri River are facing sufferings, he added.

The mayor further said, relief has been asked for, and measures are being taken in this regard.

Chairman of Holdia Union in Ukhiya Upazila Imrul Kayes Chowdhury said, 3,000 families are water-confined in 20 villages in his union.

In cooperation with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanveer Hossain,  food is being distributed among people round the clock, he added.

As the rain is continuing, low areas are submerged; water stranding has been created in main roads in the town.

In Goldighirpar, Bouddha Mandir area, Kalatali, and Sadar Union and Jingla Union   over 20 villages were inundated.

Most submergence was reported in Ukhiya Upazila, where 1.5 lakh people were marooned in over 150 villages.

Cox's Bazar Municipality Mayor Mahbubur Rahman said, eight villages in the municipality including Kutubdia Para, Fodnardail, Mostak Para, and Nazirartek were entirely flooded; more than 10,000 families live in these areas. 

Chairman of Jingla Union in Cox's Bazar Sadar Union Tipu Sultan reported 20 villages inundated in his union, marooning numerous people. Public suffering is increasing, he added. 

Assistant Meteorologist of the Cox's Bazar Meteorological Office Abdul Mannan said, the rough weather situation has been created in Cox's Bazar due to depression accumulation in the Bay of Bengal.

Heavy and very heavy rain is likely in the next three days, and hill slope slide also is likely, he added. 

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Shahin Imran said, due to the downpour, people became marooned in several areas; people became water-confined mostly in five unions of the upazila.

All types of activities are running to assist victim people, the DC added.
