BARISHAL, Aug 4: Despite fighting against natural disasters, the fish production in the southern (S) region of the country has been almost double in recent times.

Barishal region is surplus of milk, egg and meat.

This region is prone to frequent natural disaster. Also manpower shortage in the Department of Fisheries (DoF) is a big barrier to developing the fisheries sector.

Overcoming various limitations, about 75 per cent growth in the fisheries development was registered in the southern region in the last one decade.

Now the surplus fish production has been about 2.35 metric tons (MT) against the demand of three lakh tonnes.

In the last decade, the total fish production growth was 53 per cent. The surplus food in the southern region is about 11 lakh MT.

According to sources at the DoF, in the last decade, Hilsa production has been increased by  112 per cent. Of the total Hilsa production in the country, 66 per cent is collected in the southern region.

More than 11 per cent people of the country live on fishing directly and indirectly.

The country gained fish production solvency in 2016-17. But the southern region achieved the solvency five years back.

According to UN's FAO-2018 Report, in the case of open and internal fish collection, Bangladesh ranks third in the world; and in the case of stranded marshes, the country ranks fifth.

There are  about 26,000 hectares (ha) of stranded marshes and 4,27,482 ha of open marshes in six districts of the region; besides, there are about 2,500 private fish farms, about 50  government-private  fish hatcheries,  920 nursery farms and about 9,000 shrimp farms in the region.

Their contribution to the fisheries sector is significant.

According to fisheries experts, people of Barishal are shifting to fish farming as the fish farming is much profit-bearing than the agriculture.

In 2008, after Cyclone Sidr, cyclones Mahasen, Amphan, Aila, Chirang, and lastly Cyclone Remal damaged fisheries in the region seriously; fish enclosures and ponds were washed away; fish growers turned all lost. But they stood around again.

At present, the growth making fish cultivation is continuing in 42 upazilas of the Barishal or southern region.

So far, 11 rivers in the region have been declared reserved zones. This is playing significant role in increased fish production in open water bodies in the region.
