Following Sheikh Hasina's resignation and fleeing the country, a fresh spate of violence swept over Satkhira district on Monday resulting in deaths of 14 indiviuals.
Pratapnagar Union Parishad chairman Abu Daud confirmed the incident.
The deceased were identified as the president of Pratapnagar Union Awami League (AL) unit in Ashashuni Upazila Zakir Hossain, his brother Jahangir Hossain, nephew Sajib Hossain, Ashiqur Rahman, Saker Ali and driver Shahin Hossain. Additionally, Adam Ali, 28, from Kalyanpur, Anaj Billah, 17, from Kola, Anaz Ali, 18, from Kurikaunia, Asafur Rahman, 40, from Vaikari, Touhid Islam, 30, from Mrigadanga, Saiful Islam, 25, BNP activists Zahid Hossain, 28, and Faruk Hossain, 35, were also killed.
Eyewitnesses and local sources reported that thousands of people reportedly launched an attack on Zakir Hossain’s house in Kalyanpur village around 6 PM. At that time, Zakir allegedly opened fire on the crowd, resulting in immediate deaths of Adam Ali, Anaj Billah, and Anaj Ali.
The attackers then set Zakir's house on fire and beat him along with his five relatives to death around 8pm.
Similarly, last night, AL activist Asafur Rahman was beaten to death.
Meanwhile, a clash between AL and BNP supporters in Mrigadanga led to the deaths of Touhid Islam, Saiful Islam, Zahid Hossain, and Faruk Hossain, confirmed by Vaikari UP chairman Abu Mohammad Mustafa Kamal.
The police also reported arson and looting incidents at Satkhira Sadar, the traffic office, and Shyamnagar police stations.
Multiple minority families have expressed their apprehensions via phone, with no police available to assist them.
Satkhira District Commissioner Mohammad Humayun Kabir said that efforts were underway to improve the situation.
