DAULATPUR, KUSHTIA, Aug 6: Many farmers in Chardiar Village under Hogalbaria Union of Daulatpur Upazila in the district are facing loss after buying Hiraman maize seeds.

Local farmers alleged that they bought seeds of Hiraman maize and planted those on lands, but there was nothing inside the seeds.

They lodged complaints with Daulatpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Upazila Agriculture Officer against Bayer Company in this connection.

According to the complaints, at least 100 farmers including Monirul Islam, Jiarul, Imarul Islam, Affan, Shimul, Shamim Reza, Babu, Rafiqul, Tahidul, Marjel, Azgar and Alamgir of Char Diar Village under Hogalbaria Union in the upazila bought high-yielding Hiraman BRI 914 maize seeds invented by well-known Bayer Company.  They bought the seeds from the seed store of one Monirul Islam in the area and planted on their croplands. But as there were no grains in those maize seeds, the farmers faced severe financial loss.

While seed trader Monirul was contacted by those affected farmers, the businessman told that he informed the matter to the company concerned.

Later on, Monirul along with the affected farmers lodged complaint with the UNO and the Agriculture Officer.

While contacted with the Bayer Company, their representatives claimed that the seeds might have been damaged because of virus.
