Hundreds of officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) demonstrated at the office of the tax administrator on Wednesday (August 7) demanding the resignation of its chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem.
They demanded the dismissal of opportunistic officials, including current Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem and First Secretary (Tax Admin) Md Shahiduzzaman.
The protesters raised a 9-point demand that included not allowing deputation for anyone from the administrative cadre like the NBR chairman.
The employees demonstrated in front of the NBR chairman's office on Wednesday. They included officials at the board member level, VAT and income tax departments.
NBR Chairman Muneem was absent in the office on Wednesday, officials said.
First Secretary of Customs Md Neyamul Islam said: "The NBR chairman has been using divide and rule all the time."
He said the chairman has established a 'reign of terror' by bringing in close allies from the administration and making them his first and second secretary.
He also said the previous government had taken advantage of the chairman to file a 'false case' against Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is set to take charge of the interim government.
Other officials and employees expressed similar opinions and burnt a poster of the chairman.
