Interim govt led by Dr Yunus to take oath today

Nobel laureate economist Dr Muhammad Yunus, who has been selected as the chief of the interim government to be formed after his return, is expected to return to Bangladesh at 2:10pm on Thursday.

A Yunus Centre press release on Wednesday stated that Muhammad Yunus will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on an Emirates flight from Dubai at 2:10pm, subject to the flight being on time. 

The leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement, have nominated Dr Yunus as the head of an interim government following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister on Monday in the face of massive protests.

According to the announcement of Army Chief Gerenal Wakar-uz Zaman, the oath of the new interim would be conducted at 8pm on Thursday.

Early on Wednesday, Nahid Islam, a key coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Students' Movement, told reporters outside Bangabhaban that the administration of the oath of the interim government would be possible within 24 hours or slightly more.

President Mohammaed Sahabuddin and chiefs all armed forces also agreed to the proposal of the students.

Nahid said that Dr Muhammad Yunus's name was proposed during the meeting. The President also agreed, saying the interim government would be formed under his leadership.

He said that they have already drafted the outline of the new government and discussed with the President. Once everying is finalized, it would be declared within next 24 hours.

Thirteen coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement went to Bangabhaban immediately after 6:00 pm on Tuesday to discuss the country's current situation and the structure of the interim government.

Among others, chiefs of three armed forces - Army, Navy and Airforce - and Dhaka University teacher Asif Nazrul also joined the six-hour long meeting ended at around 12:00 am.
