Yunus-led advisers of interim govt take oath

The advisory council of the new interim government led by Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus on Thursday took oath of office at Bangabhaban in presence of Army Chief Gen Waker-uz Zaman.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office at 9:20pm in the Darbar Hall of the Bangabhaban while Cabinet Secretary M Mahbub Hossain conducted the ceremony.

Along with Prof Dr. Muhammad Yunus, 16 members of the advisory council including two representatives of the students have also taken oath in the same programme.

The advisory council members are Dr Md Saleh Uddin Ahmed, academic Dr Asif Nazrul, Advocate Hasan Arif, Brig Gen (Rtd) M Shakhawat Hossain, Advocate Adilur Rahman Khan, former foreign secretary Touhid Hossain, development workers Farida Akhter, Sharmeen Murshid and Nurjahan Begum, environment lawyer Syeda Rezwana Hasan, health expert Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy, coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Faruq-e-Azam Bir Protik, representative from the CHT Suprodip Chakma, and Hefazat-e Islami leaders AFM Khalid Hasan.

Of the 16 members of the council, Suprodip Chakma, Faruq-e-Azam and Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy will take oath later as they are out of Dhaka now. The rests of the advisers have taken their oath.

In the welcome speech, the Cabinet Secretary recalled the memory of the martyrs of the War of Liberation in 1971 and the martyrs of the students' movement of 2024.

The programme began with the recitation of the holy Quran.

Later, the Cabinet Secretary invited Prof Muhammad Yunus to take oath as the chief adviser and he took his oath. Later, the chief adviser signed documents of the oath. 

Following the oath taking of the chief adviser, the other advisers took their oath and signed documents.

With the completion of the procedures, members of the new council have taken their charges.

Dr Muhammad Yunus entered the Darbar Hall at around 8:32pm and took the chair reserved for the chief adviser. The protection team of the chief advisers carried him from his Gulshan residence.

Other members of the advisory council entered the hall gradually starting from 7:00pm along with the guest invited to join the function and took their reserved seats.

President Sahabuddin entered the house at 9:04 and took his seat.

More than 400 guests from different corners including the politicians, diplomats, senior lawyers, academician, development workers, high government officials, representatives from Anti-Discrimination Students Movement and journalists joined the event.

Among the politicians, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, leaders Mirza Abbas, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader and Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Krishak Shramik Janata League President Bangabir Kader Siddique, Bir Uttam, Jamaat-e Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Communist Party Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince, Nagarik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Ganasanghati Andolon Convener Zonayed Saki, BJP Chairman Andaleev Rahman Partho attended the function.

But, no Awami League leader was invited to the ceremony.
