RAJSHAHI, Aug 10: A successful dragon farmer Ismail Hossain in Godagari Upazila of the district is expecting to earn Taka one crore by selling fruits and saplings.

He has raised his huge dragon garden on five acres of land at Sonadighir crossing along the Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway in the upazila.

After sapling plantation, he started to get profits within one year.

Ismail Hossain is a dweller of Pirijpur area of the upazila. In 2021 he started his dragon on one acre of land, quitting his 17 years of edible oil business; in the first year, he sold fruits of Tk 20-22 lakh.

Later on, he increased the land size of his garden to five acres by taking lease of four acres.
Now he is expecting to get a yearly sale of Taka one crore from five-acre garden.

Ismail said, there is no loss in dragon cultivation; it is profitable;  one can get good yielding from a garden of one bigha at a cost of Tk 2 to 2.5 lakh; and per bigha fruit production stands at 80-100 maunds; and if per kilogram dragon sells at Tk 100, there will be no loss.

He has sold saplings for one 10 acres of land from one acre garden. "I have increased my garden by four acres. A grower can get profit of Tk 2-3 lakh per year from one bigha garden."

"I am yet to face pest attack. It needs rot-preventive spray in a week or 10 days. But excessive heat damages fruits a bit," he added.

He further said, "There is no role of the agriculture department in my garden. Agriculture officials should give their attention to dragon cultivation."

"I have been personally benefitted. I want farmers to start dragon farming," he maintained.
He gave assurance of assisting others.

A garden worker Naym Islam said, "I have been working in this garden for the last few months. I do the job of garden spraying and fruit cutting. I feel very delighted to work in such environment. It is a profit-making business."

Godagari Upazila Agriculture Officer Mariam Ahmed said, "Dragon is cultivated on 190 hectares (ha) of land in Godagari Upazila. Our initiative is continuing to increase the dragon farming. There was not much dragon gardens at Godagari; farmers were encouraged through our different projects."

As growers are benefitting, the dragon cultivation is expanding with new dragon gardens, he added.
He further said, farmers are becoming interested as the soil of Barind region is suitable for dragon, and the market price is good.

"We give necessary advice for dragon cultivation; we will take initiative about increasing agriculture tools; but the primary cost of dragon farming is higher," he added.

Deputy Director of DAE-Rajshahi Umme Salma said, as the agriculture department encouraged, the dragon cultivation has gained today's position; and the market of dragon is good, having many benefits.

"Our encouraging advice is continuing," he added.
