Lightning kills five in three districts

Five people including a woman and a teenage girl were killed and another was injured by lightning strikes in separate incidents in three districts - Thakurgaon, Mymensingh and Sherpur, on Saturday and Sunday.

THAKURGAON: Three people including a woman and her daughter were killed by lightning strike in Ranishankail Upazila of the district on Sunday noon.

The incident took place in Ushdhari Village under Hosingaon Union of the upazila at around 12:30 pm.

The deceased were identified as Marina Begum, 45, wife of Syed Ali of Ushdhari Village under Ranishankail Upazila, her daughter Sathi Akter, 14, and Abdul Alim, son of Naushad Ali, a resident of Jadurani Paschim College Para area under Haripur Upazila in the district.

Local sources said that Marina and her daughter Sathi went to a paddy field to gather rice at around 12:30 pm. They were returning home when it started raining. On the way, they were struck by lightning, which left the duo dead on the spot.

At the same time, Alim was also struck by the thunderbolt while he was working in a field there. He also died on the spot.

Amgaon Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Habibur Rahman of Haripur Upazila confirmed the incident.

GOURIPUR, MYMENSINGH: A man was killed and another injured by lightning strike in Gouripur Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The incident took place in Shoulgai Village under the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Suruj Ali, 36, son of Jaher Ali, a resident of the village. He was a day-labourer by profession.

The injured person is Abdul Khaleq, 50, son of Hossain Ali Fakir of the area.

It was known that Suruj Ali and Abdul Khaleq were working on a cropland in the area in the afternoon. At that time, thunderbolt struck them, which left the duo critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took them to Gouripur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Suruj Ali dead.

Teacher of Barhatta CKP Government High School Abdul Maleqm elder brother of injured Abdul Khaleq, confirmed the incident.

NALITABARI, SHERPUR: A man was killed by lightning strike in Nalitabari Upazila of the district on Saturday noon.

The incident took place in Konnagar Village under Marichpuran Union in the upazila at around 2:30 pm.
 
The deceased was identified as Sohel Rana, son of Jamal Uddin, a resident of the aforesaid village. He was a farmer by profession.

According to local sources, Sohel Rana was working on a paddy field in the area at noon. All of a sudden, thunderbolt struck him at around 2:30 pm, which left him critically injured.

Sohel Rana was then rescued by the local people and taken to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Marichpuran UP Chairman Aiyub Ali confirmed the incident.
