Out of dismay over dark chapter of student politics for years, university and college students are now resolved to prevent comeback of politics and demanded regular election of student unions on campuses across the country.

They said student wings of all political parties who were in power including Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) had given them horrible memories for reminiscence.

Failure of student parties to understand the pulse of general students in historic movements in the past including Road Safety Movement and Quota Reform Movement in 2018 was a popular argument in favour of their demand to ban student politics on campuses.

"If the country needs, students will automatically be united under a uniform banner," said Habibul Hasan Nayeem, a fourth-year student of Dhaka University English Department.

He substantiated how all student parties, keeping their political banners aside, were united against the Sheikh Hasina government and the protests led to her fall.

Nayeem said, "We shall press and convey our demands to the administration through our elected representatives of student unions."

Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad of DU Bangla Department told the Daily Observer that student politics could never bring fruitful outcomes for the past many years.

"Student parties were seen working for their parent organisations and implementing their ideologies," said Musaddiq, adding, they could never reflect students' demands.

He said student parties at Dhaka University could never showcase coexistence.

DU Management student Osman Sarwar argued that political student parties used to conduct their activities making general students hostage in exchange of a seat in residential halls and hostels of universities and colleges.

"We do not want anymore Gonoroom and Guestroom cultures on the campuses," he said.

Osman emphasised allocation of seats to regular students by hall administration.

However, student parties can conduct political activities outside the campuses.

Meanwhile, at least 19 DU socio-cultural student organisations demanded ban on student politics in the Teacher-Student Centre area on the campus.

They decided not elect or select those for the executive committees of the organisatioins who have affiliation with any political student party.

In a joint statement on August 9, the organisations demanded DU Central Students' Union (DUCSU) polls.

Meanwhile, the authorities of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Dhaka Medical College (DMC), Comilla University (CoU), Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Mymensingh, Bangladesh University of Textile (BUTEX), Rajshahi University of Science and Technology (RUET), Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Barishal University (BU), Sir Salimullah Medical College and Chittagong Medical College banned student politics on their respective campuses.

They pronounced punishment if any student is found involved in politics on the campus.
