Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar has been appointed as acting Governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB) which will be effective immediately on Sunday as per official order from the Ministry of Finance.

In the wake of widespread political unrest, Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rauf Talukder resigned on Friday just days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country amid escalating protests.

Talukder's resignation, which occurred two years before his term was set to end, has been attributed to personal reasons.  However, the timing coincides with significant unrest in the country, including mass protests by students which called for removal of officials linked to Hasina's government.

The resignation of Talukder, along with Supreme Court Chief Justice and other top officials, marks a pivotal moment in Bangladesh's ongoing crisis. The turmoil began earlier this month and hastened by  Sheikh Hasina step down following violent demonstrations. An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has since been struggling to restore order.

On Wednesday, protesters stormed Bangladesh Bank headquarters in Dhaka, further pressuring Talukder to resign. The Ministry of Finance quickly moved to appoint Nurun Nahar as the acting Governor, who will manage the central bank's daily operations until a new Governor is officially appointed.

The situation in Bangladesh remains volatile, with ongoing demonstrations and calls for political reforms at every sector. The interim government faces the daunting task of stabilizing the country amidst increasing demands for justice and accountability from the general populace and minority group.
