The annual consumer price growth hit highest in 12 years reaching in July 11.66% due to increase in both food and non-food inflation, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data released on Monday.

Compared with prices of goods in June, July’s prices rose by 2.17%. The general inflation rate in June was 9.72 percent.

However, student-led protests against government policies and heavy-handed measures adopted by authorities, including curfews, disrupted supply chains across the country, resulting in price hikes.

In July’s inflation rate, food prices made the biggest contribution rising by 14.10%, while prices of non-food items rose 9.68%.
