Most of the universities across the country including the Chittagong University (CU) have become gurdianless following the resignation of the current Vice-Chancellors that led to stop all administrative work.

Soon after the resignation of the CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Abu Taher from his position teachers and students demanded the appointment of the vice-chancellor as soon as possible.

Before the appointment of the Vice-Chancellors, the discussion has started now, who is the next vice-chancellor of the Chittagong University.

Some say, politically known teachers can be more student-friendly. They say that it will be difficult to run the administration if there is no party member. Others say that as a result of non-partisan government in the country, the vice-chancellor can be made from teachers who are not politically known.

About the appointment of the vice-chancellor, a teacher of the department of Islamic history and culture of the university said, "Personally, I think that the university administration will do well if a politically known teacher is appointed as the vice-chancellor."

Because in managing the university he will get support from the teachers and students of the same genre. On the other hand, if someone from neutral is given the responsibility of Vice-Chancellor, he may not get that cooperation.

After the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in the anti-discrimination student movement, there have been calls for resignations in public universities across the country.

On August 12, CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Abu Taher resigned from his post and two pro-vice-chancellors Professor Benu Kumar Dey and Professor Sekander Chowdhury also resigned at the same time. Since then, speculation has started in various quarters of the university about who will be the next vice-chancellor.

General teachers-students of the university said that there is a wide discussion about several teachers as vice-chancellors. They are - Syndicate member of the university, finance and banking department professor Dr Mohammad Shamim Uddin Khan, Biochemistry and Biochemistry Department Professor Md Atiar Rahman, Finance  Department Professor SM Nasrul Kadir, International Relation Department Professor Dr Md Saiful Islam, Islamic history and culture department professor Muhammad Sakhawat Hussain.

Among them, Professor Dr Shamim Uddin Khan, who is well known as a student-friendly teacher in the campus. The teachers and students of his department have been praised for his academic skills and abilities at various times.

He has been seen to play a strong role in various logical movements and human rights issues of students. He was also seen standing by the students in the recent anti-discrimination student movement.

When asked to some teachers and students of the university about Professor Dr Shamim Uddin Khan, they said that Dr Khan was elected Syndicate member by securing the highest number of votes in the history of the university, which proved his popularity among the teachers and students in the campus.
