A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Monday seeking the cancellation of the registration of the Bangladesh Awami League and a ban AL as a political party for mass killing of students and citizens during the quota reform movement.

Arifur Rahman Bhuiyan, executive director of the rights group Sarda Society, filed the writ, pleading to rename all the institutions across the country named after ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The writ sought at least a three-year term for the interim government to implement necessary reforms, recovery of 11 lakh crore that had been smuggled abroad, and removal of officers appointed on a contractual basis during the previous Awami League administration.

The cabinet secretary, the secretary of the public division of the President's Office, the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission, the law secretary, the secretary of the Election Commission, the secretary of the Banking and Financial Institutions Division, the chairman of the National Board of Revenue, the governor of the Bangladesh Bank, the head of the BFIU, and the coordinators and deputy coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have been made respondents in the petition.

The HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam is likely to hold hearing on the petition.

After filing the petition, Arifur Rahman Bhuiyan told the media that the petition also sought to make the current term of the interim government a minimum of three years in order to implement reforms to the country, and to order the return of Tk 11 trillion smuggled out of the country.

He also demanded that all officials appointed during the Awami League's tenure, including the chairman of the PSC, all the departmental commissioners of the current administration, the deputy commissioners, UNOs, all divisional commissioners of police, SPs, and OCs be replaced and an impartial investigation commission be formed by the judiciary.

According to the media report, more than 217 people were death in violence and conflict from 16 July to 3 August during the students' movement. And another 365 died after the fall of the government in 4 August. That means, in all, there are 582 reported deaths from 16 July till date. Cases are being filed many Awami League leaders including its party chief and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in this regard.
