Dipu Moni, Joy remanded

Awami League joint secretary and former minister Dipu Moni and former deputy minister Arif Khan Joy were placed on different terms of remand on Tuesday in a case filed over murder of a grocer Abu Sayed during the recent movement of students against discrimination in Dhaka's Mohammadpur areas. 

Of the two, Dipu Moni was placed on four-day remand and Joy was placed on five-day remand in the case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Shohagh Uddin passed the order as Inspector Tofazzal Hossain of Mohammadpur Police Station, also Investigation Officer (IO) of the case produced the duo before the court with a prayer to grant a 10-day remand each. 

Police arrested former social welfare minister Dipu Moni from the capital's Baridhara area on Monday evening.

Dipu Moni also served as foreign minister and education minister during various terms of the Awami League governments. 

Police also arrested former deputy sports minister Arif Khan Joy from Dhanmondi area of the capital on Monday night in the murder case Arif Khan Joy was elected as a member of parliament for the Netrokona-2 constituency in 2014.

The former professional footballer served as the deputy minister for the Ministry of Youth and Sports from 2014 to 2018.

Abu Sayed was killed after getting shot by police on 40-feet road in Bosila area under Mohammadpur Police Station on July 19 as the law enforcers fired indiscriminately at the protesting students during the recent movement of the Students against Discrimination.
