At least one person died and thousands of other displaced due to flood caused by heavy rains and onrush of water from the upstream in eight districts of the country.

Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on Wednesday said flood situation worsening in Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Feni, Chattogram, Noakhali, Cumilla and Khagrachhari.

Members of the Bangladesh Army have been deployed to rescue flood victims in Parshuram and Fulgazi upazilas of Feni on Wednesday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press statement.

One and half million people are grappling with severe flooding that has caused widespread destruction to crops and fisheries, with many forced to abandon their homes in search of shelter.

On Monday night, Raju, the son of Mizanur Rahman died at the Dakshin Sreepur Paschimmatha area of Fulgazi Sadar union while he went to fishing with friends at a breached embankment when he was swept away by strong currents.

Although locals managed to rescue him, he was declared dead upon arrival at Fulgazi Upazila Health Complex. Raju's friend is still missing.

Entire communities are now in desperate need of shelter, as their homes and roads have been inundated.

The local administration, overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster, has sought assistance from the Bangladesh Army and the Fire Service and Civil Defence to evacuate those trapped by the rising waters.

According to the ISPR the army has been using speedboats and helicopters for the rescue operation. The flood situation in Feni, Cumilla, and Noakhali has worsened due to relentless rainfall and a rise in the water level of rivers, leaving over 1.5 million people stranded.

The flood may spread further, said Additional Secretary KM Ali Reza of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief at a press briefing on the ongoing flood situation at the secretariat.

He said according to the Met office forecast, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in the northeastern region of the country and adjoining upstream in the next 48 hours. As a result, the water level of the major rivers of the northeastern districts of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrakona, Moulvibazar and Habiganj may rise, he added.

He said the water level of major rivers in the northeastern and eastern region  of the country keep rising.
