A court on Thursday ordered to send former Thakurgaon mayor Anjuman Ara Bonna to jail in connection with a murder case.

Bonna, also a member of (AL) Awami League central committee, was arrested on late Wednesday night (August 21) from a residence of her relative at Boda upazila under the neighboring Panchagarh district.
Boda Police Station officer-in-charge Mojammel Haque confirmed the matter, adding," Bonna was made accused in a murder case lodged at Sadar police station by Zakir Hossain, father of the victim and a resident of Arazi Paikpara village in Sadar upazila."

On Thursday, Bonna was presented before Thakurgaon Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, where police sought for a five-day remand for a thorough investigation. The presiding judge, Nityananda Sarkar, scheduled the next hearing for August 25 and ordered Bonna to be sent to jail in the meantime.

The case names 77 individuals, including Thakurgaon-1 MP Ramesh Chandra Sen, district Awami League General Secretary Deepak Kumar Roy, reserved seat MP Draupadi Devi Agarwala, former Mayor Anjuman Ara Bonna, and Councilor Ekramuddaula. Additionally, 150-200 unnamed individuals have been accused in connection with the murder.

According to the case statement, councilor Ekramuddaula summoned four individuals, including Zakir Hossain's son Rakibul Hasan Roki, to discuss issues related to student movement. At that time, a heated argument ensued between the students and councilor, during which the four were allegedly confined inside a room. It is claimed that Ekramuddaula then set fire to the room while the other accused persons kept watch outside. The accused then quickly fled the scene, leaving the victims trapped inside.

Locals rescued the four victims in a severely burned state and rushed them to Thakurgaon General Hospital. Later, they were transferred to Rangpur and then to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, Rakibul Hasan Roki, Shaon Parvez, and Abu Rayhan succumbed to their injuries. The fourth victim, Al Mamun, also passed away while receiving treatment in Rangpur.
