Gumti River flowing above danger level.

The flood situation in Cumilla has worsened over the past 24 hours, with new areas submerged due to rising water. As of Saturday, approximately 700,000 residents remain stranded, struggling to cope with inundation.

The Gumti River has surged to dangerous levels, currently flowing 80cm above its danger mark, further exacerbating the crisis. The flooding has submerged key roads, severely hampering relief efforts.

Volunteers are finding it increasingly difficult to reach affected areas due to the scarcity of boats, crucial for distributing essential supplies.

Local authorities have responded by opening 726 shelter centres across the district, with around 50,000 people seeking refuge in these facilities. To aid those who are affected by the flood, 340 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 15 lakh in cash have been allocated.

Additionally, 225 medical teams are on standby, prepared to provide much-needed medical assistance to flood victims. Despite these efforts, the scale of the disaster continues to pose significant challenges for both residents and rescuers.
