Disorganized relief system deprives affected people in Laxmipur

LAXMIPUR, Aug 25:  The relief distribution and rescue operation are drastically halted in the district mainly due to lack of organised activities.

According to field-level scenario, both official and unofficial relief and rescue operations are taking place in uttered disorganized manner. 

Inadequate relief and uttered boat shortage in the district are continuing to raise public suffering levels.

The flood in Laxmipur is still deteriorating. Yet it is not getting survival level of relief. The flood water in the district was swelled by 2-3 feet on Friday.

But people in Feni District got relief.

Seven lakh people are lying marooned in 40 in five upazilas, four municipalities and coastal areas in Laxmipur.

Since the Friday afternoon, the electricity service has been disrupted in many areas of the district, throwing over 50,000 people in darkness. Their suffering is on the rise. 

In carrying out usual relief distribution volunteers are hiccupping mainly due to boat crisis. The overall public life is affected.

Along with the district-upazila administration, different volunteer organisations and political parties including BNP-Jammat are distributing dry food, rice-pulse and others among the flood-trapped people. Many areas still remain out of relief services. 

The crisis of pure drinking water has been severe. It was complained by victim locals.

According to official sources, so far, over 20,000 people have taken shelters in different shelter centres. 

A flood victim of Char Rohita in Sadar Upazila Azad Hossain said, "Though I am water-confined, I have yet to get any relied assistance. Days are passing in agony. There is no end to public sufferings. The way water is increasing, we don't know where it will reach."

Another Osman Goni said, "We have been marooned for several days. Food cannot be cooked due to submerged oven. We cannot eat food."

While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, upazila nirbahi officers of five upazilas of Laxmipur confirmed seven lakh people water stranded.

Quoting Palli Bidyut and Power Development Board, they reported 50,000 people still in the dark of electricity cut-off.

BNP's Joint Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Ane and BNP's Chairperson's Adviser  Abul Khair Bhuiyan said, BNP will send relief  to every house in flood-affected areas.

He requested the interim government for resorting organized relied and rescue systems so that every family gets the relief and rescue facilities. 

Deputy Commissioner Suraiya Jahan said, water stranding was reported in localities as dams were raised in different areas including the Dakatia and Rahmatkhali rivers; in the last two days, over 200 dams were cut; now water is receding.

The DC confirmed the inadequate relief and boat for running the relief and rescue works smoothly.
