KHULNA, Aug 25: Over 15,000 marooned people are now in distress condition although hundreds of villagers failed to repair river embankments in Paikgachha Upazila of the district after 24 hours of hectic voluntary attempts.
The distressed people were evacuated to roads and different shelters. Different voluntary, social organizations and Bangladesh Navy are distributing relief and necessary materials among the flood-affected people.
Paikgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahera Naznin said, villagers were trying to repair the embankments over the last two days but they are yet to do this due to heavy tidal wave.
Different organizations including Navy are distributing relief goods and getting treatments to the distressed and sick people, and the government has sent adequate relief for the distressed people, she added.
Bangladesh Navy in a press release on Saturday said, they (Navy) distributed relief goods and provided treatment among the villagers. Navy men are working to shift flood-affected people to safe places, the press release added.

At least 13 villages, fish enclosures and crop fields were inundated by heavy tide in the upazila after the river embankment collapsed.
