Former IGPs Mamun, Shahidul remanded in murder cases



A court in Dhaka on Wednesday morning placed former inspectors general of police (IGPs) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on a seven-day remand while AKM Shahidul Haque on an eight-day remand in two separate murder cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Akteruzzaman placed them on remand at about 7:30am.

Mamun was remanded in a case filed over the killing of a grocery shop owner Abu Sayeed, in Mohammadpur on July 19 during the Quota Reform Movement.

On August 13, SM Ameer Hamza Shatil, a resident of Mohammadpur filed the murder case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and six others with the court over the killing of Sayeed.

On the other hand, Shahidul was remanded in a case filed over the killing of 45-year-old trader Abdul Wadud at New Market area in the capital on July 19.

On August 21, Abdur Rahman, brother-in-law of Wadud, filed the case with New Market Police Station against Hasina and 129 others including Shahidul Haque.

Both the former IGPs were arrested from Uttara in the capital early Wednesday.

Al-Mamun and Shahidul Haque were produced before the CMM court at about 6:30am. After that, for fair investigation, the investigation officer pleaded to the court to place them on a 10-day remand.

Their lawyer submitted a bail petitions for them. After hearing, the magistrate passed the remand orders rejecting their bail prayers.
DMP's Public Relations Department said Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was under the custody of army. Since a case was filed against him, he expressed his willingness to surrender to police. He was taken to police custody at night.

On the other hand, Shahidul Haque was arrested from a house at Sector 16 in Uttara.

Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government was ousted from power through the student-people's movement on August 5 last. Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was the IGP of that goverment and many students and people were shot dead by police during the fag end of his tenure. His contractual appointment was cancelled on August 6 by the interim goverment.

On the other hand, Shahidul Haque was appointed as IGP on December 30, 2014. He went on retirement on January 31 in 2018.
