The newly appointed UNICEF Representative to Bangladesh Rana Flowers on Wednesday (September 4) reaffirmed the UN body's commitment in advancing the rights of every child in Bangladesh.
Flowers, who assumed her office in Dhaka on August 5 made the assertion following presentation of her credential to Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain at foreign ministry in Dhaka, a foreign ministry statement said, reports BSS.
During her meeting, she emphasized UNICEF's strategic focus on enhancing essential social services for children, including health, nutrition and access to water as well as safeguarding child rights.
"This is a crucial time for Bangladesh. My heart is with the countless children, young people and families affected by the recent violence, cyclone and flooding," she added.
Flower also highlighted her priorities in tackling critical issues such as the climate crisis, juvenile justice and improving skills training through the educational system to boost employment opportunities for young people.
"UNICEF's work is rooted in a commitment to children's rights and driven by a belief in the dignity and potential of every child and young person," he said.
Flowers added, "By working closely with the government, private sector, long-time UNICEF partners and with children and adolescents, we aim to build on our achievements and address the significant challenges ahead."
Under Flowers' leadership, UNICEF will continue to support the interim government in delivering both immediate humanitarian aid and long-term developmental initiatives, particularly in areas impacted by recent natural disasters, the statement added.
UNICEF will also maintain its focus on protecting the rights of children living in refugee camps, ensuring that every child receives the support they need, it read.
An Australian national, Flowers brings over 35 years of experience in international development, child development and policy advocacy having previously served as UNICEF Representative in Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Mongolia and Belize.
