Snake-bitten patients on rise in Laxmipur, Noakhali

Snake biting is increasing in flooded districts including Laxmipur and Noakhali as snakes cannot go away with receding water due to fishing nets.

LAXMIPUR:  Snake-bitten patients are increasing in District Sadar Hospital. Daily at least 15 patients including men, women and children are going to Sadar Hospital. So far since the beginning of the flood, 80 snake-bitten patients were admitted to the Sadar Hospital.

This information was confirmed by Sadar Hospital doctors.

Flood water has been stranded due to limited water recession, pushing up the menace of snakes.

Now, with the flood water receding, pneumonia, diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases are affecting people; hospital floors, and front spaces of doctor's chambers are full of such patients.

Emergency Medical Officer of Sadar Hospital Dr Joynal Abedin said, in tandem with water-borne disease patients, snake-bitten patients are increasing in the hospital.

"We got highest 15 patients in a single day," he added.

He further said, as there are fishing nets around, snake's free moving is halted; at the same time, snakes wait near fishing net for prey; snake likes dry place as safe shelter.

"Our advice for all to be aware about snake", the medical officer said.

After snakebite, take the patient to Sadar Hospital without making any late, he added.

Besides, he further said, more than one places above the bitten part need to be tied while the patient will have to keep strong in mind.
So far, no death from snakebite has been found.

NOAKHALI: After being bitten by snakes in flooded areas in the district, 250 patients were admitted to hospitals.

After receiving treatment, they went back home at different times.

It was learnt, a 14-day non-stop raining caused swelling to the Muhuri River water level in Feni District; flood water entered Noakhali, inundating its eight upazilas; and in some places it was knee-deep water. Normal living was disrupted.

In the last 14 days, at least 250 snake-bitten patients in remote areas in Sadar, Kabirhat and Subarnachar upazilas were admitted to hospitals.

Residential Medical Officer Sayed Mahiuddin Abdul Azim said, in just one day, 25 people were bitten by snakes while working in fields or homes.

Due to excessive raining, snakes are coming out of holes. It was assumed, the official added.
