A local (BNP) Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader of Gazipur's Kaliganj upazila was reportedly beaten to death on Friday.
The victim Emdadul Haque Aklu, 65, was the president of BNP's ward no. 6 unit in Muktarpur union under the upazila.
Locals alleged that the violence erupted during a clash between two factions of BNP at Nashu Market around midday. The altercation was described as severe, leading to Aklu’s fatal injuries.
However, BNP's Kaliganj unit has accused members of the Awami League of being behind the assault. Bablu Mia, general secretary of BNP's Kaliganj upazila unit, alleged that Aklu had previously been abducted by Awami League supporters during July's protests. Bablu further claimed that on the day of his death, a group of 10 to 15 Awami League men ambushed and killed Aklu while he was en route to a shop.
Kaliganj Police Station inspector (investigation) Maruf Hossain confirmed that Aklu's body is at the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex and will undergo an autopsy. He noted that the investigation is ongoing and further actions will be taken upon autopsy report.
