Road mishaps claim 16 lives in 11 districts

A total of 16 people including three women and two girls have been killed and two others injured in separate road accidents in 11 districts - Gaibandha, Gopalganj, Natore, Rajbari, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, Dinajpur, Narail, Panchagarh, Nilphamari and Bagerhat, in four days.

GAIBANDHA: A man and his son-in-law were killed in a road accident on the Bogura-Rangpur Highway in Gobindaganj Upazila of the district on Thursday night.

The deceased were identified as Jahidul Islam, 40, and his brother-in-law Shamim Mandal, 25. They were residents of Gobindanagar and Komarpur villages respectively under the upazila.

Police and local sources said that the accident occurred at around 11 pm when the duo fell off a motorbike while crossing a lane on the highway in front of a Fire Service and Civil Defence Station. Both of them were critically injured at that time.

Later on, Local people rescued the injured and rushed them to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and handed those over to the families of the deceased after completing legal procedures.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gobindaganj Police Station (PS) Shariful Islam confirmed the incident.

GOPALGANJ: A school teacher was killed after being hit by a bus in Kashiani Upazila of the district on Thursday morning.
The accident took place near Chapta Madrasa on the Dhaka-Khulna highway of the upazila at around 10:15 am.

The deceased was identified as Kanai Biswas, 30, son of Purnendu Biswas, a resident of Tarail Village under the upazila. He was a teacher in an educational institution at Sadarpur in Faridpur District.

Quoting locals, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kashiani PS Tushar Mirza said that Kanai Biswas was returning home from his work place riding on a motorcycle. On the way, an unidentified Khulna-bound bus from Dhaka hit his motorcycle near Chapta Madrasa on the Dhaka-Khulna highway at around 10:15 am, leaving him seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took him to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the teacher dead.

However, necessary steps would be taken in this regard, the SI added.

BARAIGRAM, NATORE: A man was killed in a head-on collision between two motorcycles in Baraigram Upazila of the district on Wednesday. 

The accident took place in Gunaihati area on the Natore-Pabna highway under Bonpara Municipality of the upazila at night.

The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam Shafi, 45, son of Abul Hossain, a resident of Madhaimuri Village under Majhgaon Union in the upazila. 

Quoting locals, Bonpara Highway PS SI Alimul Al Razi said that two motorcycles were collided head-on in Gunaihati area on the highway under Bonpara Municipality at night, which left a motorcyclist Shafiqul Islam Shafi seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared the man dead. Being informed, police recovered the body. 

However, necessary steps would be taken in this connection, the SI added. 

RAJBARI: Two people including a woman were killed in separate road accidents in Kalukhali and Goalanda upazilas of the district in two days.

A woman was killed after falling from a speedy motorcycle in Kalukhali Upazila of the district on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Sonali Akter, 35, wife of Md Al Amin and a resident of Bahadurpur Village under Bheramara Upazila of Kushtia District.

According to local sources, Sonali was heading towards Dhaka along with her husband Al Amin on Wednesday riding on a motorbike through the Rajbari-Kushtia highway. 

While they reached Sonapur intersection of Kalukhali Upazila in the district in the afternoon, Al Amin hit a speed-breaker, resulting in Sonali fell from the bike. 

Sonali was critically injured at that time. 

Locals then rescued her and took to Kalukhali Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the woman dead.
Pangsa Highway PS OC Mohammad Harun-ur-Rashid confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

On the other hand, a man was killed after a truck hit a private car in Goalanda Upazila of the district on Tuesday morning. 

The accident took place at around 7:30 am in front of the Goalanda Rural Electricity Office on the Rajbari-Kushtia highway of the upazila. 

The deceased was identified as Mukul Hawlader, a resident of Pangsha Upazila in the district. 
  
Mannan Munni, a friend of the deceased, said that a speedy truck hit a private car in front of the Goalanda Rural Electricity Office on the Rajbari-Kushtia highway of Goalanda Upazila at around 7:30 am while he and Mukul Hawlader were on their way to Dhaka to visit a doctor, which left Mukul critically injured. 

Injured Mukul was then rescued and taken to Rajbari Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. 
 
Sohel Rana, physician of emergency department of Rajbari Sadar Hospital, said that the man had died before being taken to the hospital.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

BRAHMANBARIA: A woman and her daughter were killed in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The accident took place on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway in Betbaria area of the upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Foyeza Banu, 45, wife of Md Ibrahim Mia, a resident of Tilikandi Village under Sarail Upazila in the district, and her daughter Ferdousi, 20.

Police and local sources said that a private car carrying Foyeza Banu and her daughter Ferdousi was heading towards Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka from Sarail Upazila in Brahmanbaria in the morning. On the way, the private car hit a stationary tractor carrying electric poles after losing its control over the steering in Betbaria area on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway under Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila, which left the duo dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies from the scene and sent those to Brahmanbaria General Hospital morgue for autopsies.

However, the law enforcers have seized the vehicles involved in the accident.

Khantihata Highway PS SI Md Sarwar confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

CUMILLA: A woman and her teenage daughter were killed after being rammed by a speedy bus in the district on Monday.

The accident took place on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Cumilla Cantonment area of the city in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Lipi Akter, 35, wife of Saudi Arabia expatriate Farid Uddin, a resident of Budhair Village under Kalirbazar Union in Sadar Upazila of the district, and her daughter Lamisa Akter, 13. Lamisa was a seventh grade student of Cumilla Cantonment School.

Quoting locals, Moynamati Highway PS OC Iqbal Bahar said that Lipi Akhter along with her daughter Lamisa was crossing the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Cumilla Cantonment area of the city in the morning to take her daughter to school. At that time, a speedy bus of 'Suganda Paribahan' hit them, which left Lipi dead on the spot and Lamisa critical injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took the seventh grader to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to the injuries after staying in the Intensive Care Unit for two hours.

Being informed, police have recovered the bodies and handed those over to the family members of the deceased without autopsies as per their request.

Later on, the law enforcers have seized the bus, however, none could be made arrested, said the OC, adding that legal proceedings were underway in this regard.

CHIRIRBANDAR, DINAJPUR: A young man was killed and two others were injured in a road accident on the Dinajpur-Rangpur road in Chirirbandar Upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The accident took place near Greenland Block and Tiles Industry in Alokdihi Union on the highway under the upazila at around 9:30 am.

The deceased was identified as Arif Hossain, 28, son of Babul Hossain, a resident of Dumutali area in Kornai Village under Sadar Upazila of the district.
 
Meanwhile, the injured persons are: Babul Hossain, 54, and Sharif Hossain, 35, residents of the same area.

Dashmail Highway PS and local sources said that a motorcycle carrying three persons collided with a speedy bus after losing its control over the steering on the highway in Greenland Block and Tiles Industry area in Alokdihi Union under Chirirbandar Upazila of the district at around 9:30 am, which left the trio critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took them to neighbouring Syedpur Hospital, where the on-duty doctor referred the three to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) following their deteriorated condition. 

Later on, Arif Hossain succumbed to his injuries on the way to the RMCH. 

Being informed, police recovered the body. 

The injured persons are currently undergoing treatment at the RMCH.

Following the accident, agitated crowd blocked the highway for one and a half hours which led a long tailback in the road.

Confirming the incident, Dashmail Highway PS OC Tarikul Islam said that the bus went to absconding. However, efforts are going on to identify the bus and arrest its drive, the OC added.

NARAIL: A young man was killed in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The accident took place in Duttopara Bus Stand area on the Narail-Lohagora-Dhaka highway of the upazila at around 7:30 am.
 
The deceased was identified as Tajin Hossain, 25, son of Abdur Razzak, a resident of Durgapur area under Narail Municipality.

Police and local sources said that a truck hit a motorcycle carrying Tajin Hossain coming from the opposite direction place in Duttopara Bus Stand area on the Narail-Lohagora-Dhaka highway in the morning, which left him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Tularampur Highway PS OC Mrittunjoy Biswas confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

PANCHAGARH: An Ansar member was killed in a road accident in Atwari Upazila of the district on Sunday.

The accident took place on the regional road at Palli Bidyut intersection under the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Shakil Hossain, 25, son of Shahidul Islam, a resident of Baradap Bamandighi Village in the upazila. 

Atwari Upazila Ansar and VDP official Farida Begum said that Shakil Hossain was not their regular Ansar member but used to perform duties during Puja and election.

According to police and local sources, Shakil Hossain was going to Atwari Bazar riding on a motorcycle from the house in the afternoon. On the way, he lost control over the steering of his motorbike and fell on the road at Palli Bidyut intersection, which left him seriously injured. 

Locals then rescued him and took to Atwari Upazila Health Complex.

Later on, he succumbed to his injuries at the health complex while undergoing treatment there.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

Atwari PS OC Abu Musa Mia confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

BAGERHAT: A man was killed after being crushed by a scavenger vehicle in Chitalmari Upazila of the district on Sunday.

The accident took place on Chitalmari Upazila Parishad premises in the town at noon.

The deceased was identified as Md Mohsin Sheikh, 39, son of Sadeq Sheikh, a resident of Mauthkandi Village under Nazirpur Upazila in neighbouring Pirojpur District. He was a part-time cleaner of Chitalmari Upazila Parishad.

Police and local sources said that Mohsin was crushed under the wheels of the scavenger vehicle at noon accidentally while the vehicle, carrying wastages from the Upazila Parishad premises, was taking a turn at Club intersection. He died on the spot.
Being informed, police recovered the body.

Police Inspector Syed Babul Akhter confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

NILPHAMARI: A two-and-a-half-year-old minor child was killed after being hit by a battery-run easy-van in Dimla Upazila of the district on Sunday morning.

The deceased toddler was identified as Abdullah, son of Hossain Ali, a resident Dakshin Titpara Khalua Para area in the upazila.

Police and local sources said that a battery-run easy-van hit the child in Dakshin Titpara Khalua Para area at around 8 am while Abdullah along with his father Hossain Ali was crossing the road. He died on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene.

Dimla PS OC Debasish Rai confirmed the incident, adding that a case was filed with the PS in this regard.
