NALITABARI, SHERPUR, Sept 7: Nayabil-Baromasi Bridge over the Duduar Khal (Canal) in Nalitabari Upazila of the district is in dire need of re-construction.

Due to this broken bridge, thousands of people and students of different educational institutions are facing communication  trouble from Rupkura-Chatkia to Baromasi Bazar.

The bridge was built three eras back for local communications.

Locals said, about two years back, hilly tide current broke the neighbouring Bhogai River dam, and it met with the Duduar Khal. At that time, most parts of the bridge broke including the railing.

But locals didn't stop to use the risky bridge as it is the only bridge for making communication  troubles from Rupkura-Chatkia to Baromasi Bazar.

At present, hundreds of small and big transports are crossing over the broken bridge taking life risk.

Victims said, about 10,000/15,000 people of Nayabil Union's Rupakura, Dudhkura, Dawakura, Chatkia, Dawdhara, Dalukona, Manikchandpara, and Pouragaon Union's Shekerkura, Andharupara, Baromasi and Polashikura villages are communicating over the railing-broken bridge.

Students and teachers of Chatkia Shahid Smriti Junior High School, Chatkia Government High School, and Dawakura Government Primary School  are using the risky bridge.

Farmer Saidul Islam of Rupakura Village said, "We move over the broken bridge taking life risk."

"Because of the broken bridge, we have to bring our agri-products to markets at higher fare. So, we demand a new bridge here soon," he added.

Head Teacher of Chatkia Junior High School Abdus Salam said, "That broken bridge over the Duduar Khal is causing us very trouble. Taking life risk, students are passing the bridge."

A new bridge is urgent here, he added.

Nalitabari Upazila Engineer Md Rakibul Hasan said, a proposal to construct a new bridge in place of the damaged one over the Duduari Khal has been sent to the authorities concerned.

If the proposal is approved, necessary measures will be taken, he added.
