International Literacy Day observed in districts

International Literacy Day-2024 was observed on Sunday across the country and the globe in a befitting manner.

This year's theme of the Day is - "Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace."

The Day (September 8) was proclaimed as International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.

To mark the Day, different programmes were organized in districts including Chapainawabganj and Pirojpur. 

CHAPAINAWABGANJ: On the occasion, different programmes were organized in the district. 

A colourful rally was brought out from the deputy commissioner's (DC) Office premises at around 10 am, and it ended at the same venue after parading main streets of the town.

Chapainawabganj DC AKM Galiv Khan led the rally with the participation of the students of Shah Neamatullah College and different schools.

Marking the Day, the district office of the Bureau of Non-Formal Education under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education organized a discussion meeting in association with Chetona Manobik Unnayan Sangstha in the conference room of the DC office.

DC AKM Galiv Khan attended the meeting as the chief guest with Additional DC (ADC) (Education and ICT) Papiya Sultana in the chair.

A power-point presentation on "Out of School Children Education Programme" was given by AQM Golam Sarwar, head of a non-government organization Chetona Manobik Unnayan Sangstha.

Head teacher of Pathanpara Government Primary School Md Maruful Haque, teacher of Ganka Shikhan Kendra Mst Alo Khatun and Executive Director of Chetona Manobik Unnayan Sangstha Md Jafrul Alam spoke on the occasion.

Representatives of various educational institutions and non-government organizations and students of various academic institutions, among others, were also present there.

Assistant Director of District Bureau of Non-Formal Education and also the assistant district primary education officer of Chapainawabganj Md Abdur Razzaq also attended the programme.

The speakers asked all to check dropouts of students and set themselves in building a new Bangladesh.

The district administration and District Bureau of Non-Formal Education then jointly arranged a discussion meeting in the conference room of the DC office.

ADC Sharif Ahmed presided over the meeting. 

Assistant Director of District Bureau of Non-Formal Education Roni Ahmed Yusub Reza, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shamima Sultana, Assistant Commissioners Monirul Islam and Sumaiya Tasnim, and Director of Digant Samaj Kalyan Samiti Shamsunnahar Mukta, among others, were also present at the programme.

Speakers in the discussion said that education plays an important role in the sustainable development of a country. Education needs to be made a core component of nation-building, not as a commodity. More steps should be taken to increase literacy, and public awareness should also be increased.

PIROJPUR: In this connection, the district administration and District Bureau of Non-Formal Education under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education jointly organized different programmes in the town. 

A rally was brought out from Pirojpur Circuit House premises in the morning, and it ended on the DC office premises after parading the main streets of the town.

After the rally, a discussion meeting was held in the conference room of the DC office.

DC Muhammad Jahedur Rahman was present as the chief guest while ADC (General) Madhubi Roy presided over the meeting.

Deputy Director of Local Government Khanjada Shahariar Bin Mannan, among others, also addressed the programme.  

Teachers, students, and government and non-government officials also took part in it.
