Sitakunda shipbreaking explosion

One more dead, seven others in critical condition

One of the injured men from the Sitakunda shipbreaking explosion died at the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka on Saturday night.

He has been identified as Aman Ullah, who sustained injuries during a fire at a shipyard in Chattogram.

"Eight people were brought in around 11:30 pm. One of them, named Aman Ullah, died on the way. He was already dead when he arrived," according to hospital sources.

The seven others injured in the incident were admitted to the institute.

Of the victims, Jahangir Alam suffered burns on 70 percent of his body, Abul Kashem on 70 percent as well, Barkatullah on 60 percent, Khairul Islam on 80 percent, Al Amin on 80 percent, Anowar Hossain on 25 percent, and a man identified only as Habib on 45 percent.

Five of them have been admitted to the ICU, while the other two are in the HDIU. All are in critical condition, according to the doctor.

"The victims are in very bad condition. Most have burns covering 60 to 80 percent of their bodies, including burns to their airways. All have major burn injuries and are in critical condition."

The explosion occurred during shipbreaking work at a ship's pump house owned by SN Corporation in Sitakunda's Shitalpur area around 11:30 pm. The blast resulted in a fire that injured 12 people.
