GANGACHARA, RANGPUR, Sept 9: Rangpur-Mahipur-Patgram highway in Gangachara Upazila of the district has been under threat due to continuous erosion by the Teesta River.

According to field sources, with water recession in the river, the displacement of erosion-affected families is continuing.

This is a yearly erosion that displaces dwellers of people living along both banks of the river.

Arable lands, living houses, trees and different installations are being eroded.

The erosion by the river has already reached near the north Teesta Bridge. The north link road of the bridge has been under threat.

In the beginning of this year's rainy season, the Teesta River was about one kilometre in the west from north edge of the bridge. But due to unabated erosion in the last four months, the river has reached near the link road of the Teesta Bridge by breaking about 500-600 metres in the east.

In the last one week, houses of four families were eroded.

These homes belonged to Saju Mia, 54, and Dudu Mia, 46, sons of late Mozammal Haq, Alimuddin, 75, son of late Hossain Ali, and Dulal Mia, 48, son of late Pedda.

During the rainy season, over 250 families in four unions of the upazila shifted their houses to other places.

These houses were in Laxmitari Union's Shankorrdah, Pachwim Ichli, Purba Ichli, Challishsal, Morneya Union's Talpotti, Alfajtari, Norsingh, Horinchara, Kolkonda Union's Char Motukpur, Char Chilakhal, Maddha Chilakal, Nohali Union's Bagdahara, and Minar Bazar.
The highest number of houses were devoured in Morneya Union's villages.

A former union member of Shankordah area Abdul Monnaf said, in the last one week, homes of four families of Shankordah Village were eroded; three of them took shelter in different places; but remaining one Dudu Mia is homeless, and he took shelter on a dam along with his family members; he is passing days in a worse condition.

Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nahid Tamanna said, "So far we have received a list of about 85 displaced families; different aids are provided to these victim families."

Besides, she added, government allocations have been approached for their rehabilitation.
