BENAPOLE, Sept 10: Around 250,000 eggs have been procured from India amid the unbridled price of the commodity in Bangladesh.
The egg shipment entered the country through Benapole land port in Jashore on Sunday, said Masudur Rahman, revenue officer at Custom House, Benapole.
As many as 2,31,040 eggs have arrived in the country. These will be released at the earliest after inspection, he said.
Around 61,950 chicken eggs were imported in the last shipment on Nov 5 last year after the commodity's price skyrocketed in the country.
The eggs were brought in by a company named HydroLand Solution from Dhaka.
Benapole's C&F agent, Ratul Enterprise submitted the documents to the Benapole Customs House for the release of the consignment, representing the company.
Ratul representative Abdul Latif said around 1,104 cartons of eggs have arrived. Each carton carries 210 eggs. The eggs have been purchased from India's 'Sree Lakshmi Narayan Bhandar.'
The commodity is now available at Tk 160-170 per dozen in Bangladesh.
However, the price of eggs imported from India is much lower.
The price of these eggs without customs duty has been estimated at $11,172.06, which is equivalent to Tk 1.3 million in local currency.
Per this, the price of eggs has come down to Tk 5.83 apiece. On that, Tk 1.92 will be added as 33 percent customs duty. Thus the import price of each egg stands a little over Tk 7.75 apiece.
The traders believe it is possible to sell the eggs at a lower price than the current market price in Bangladesh even after the addition of costs associated with transportation and wasted goods to the import price.    —bdnews24.com
