Road mishaps claim five lives in three districts

Five people including a teenage girl have been killed and two others injured in separate road accidents in three districts - Kurigram, Narail and Sylhet, in two days. 

FULBARI, KURIGRAM: A female university applicant was killed and her father injured in a road accident in Fulbari Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place in Nabdiganj area on the Rangpur-Kurigram under the upazila at around 10:30 am.

The deceased was identified as Ayesha Akhter, 19, daughter of village doctor Anisur Rahman, a resident of Ajoatari Shimultala area under Kashipur Union in the upazila. She participated in the HSC examinations from Nageshwari Degree College this year. 
  
The deceased's paternal uncle Nazrul Islam said that Anisur was taking Ayesha to Rangpur City from the city in the morning for admitting her in a university coaching centre riding on a motorcycle. On the way, a microbus hit the motorcycle in Nabdiganj area on the Rangpur-Kurigram under the upazila at around 10:30 am, which left Ayesha dead on the spot and her father seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) (Investigation) of Fulbari Police Station (PS) Nazmus Sakib Sajib confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken if any complaint is received from the deceased's family members.

NARAIL: Three persons were killed and another was injured after being hit by a truck in Lohagara Upazila of the district early Wednesday.

The accident took place at around 12:30 am in front of Maitkumra Shelter Project near Ala Munshi junction on the Narail-Dhaka highway of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Shamim Sheikh, 30, Zia Biswas, 40, and Rasel Molya, 20, residents of Maitkumra Village under Lohagara Municipality.

According to police and local sources, the grandmother of the deceased Rasel Molya fell ill on Tuesday night and died. Four people of that village including Rasel went to fetch a cot from neighbouring mosque for burying the body. 

When the four were crossing the road with the cot in that area, they were run over by a speedy truck carrying chicken from Narail to Dhaka.

Rase and Shamim died on the spot. Zia and Tuhin Sheikh were seriously injured and taken to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor pronounced Zia dead. Later on, injured Tuhin was shifted to Narail Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.

Lohagara PS OC Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the incident, saying that the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their respective families after the legal process. 

Attempts are underway to identify the truck and arrest its driver, the OC added.

SYLHET: A motorcyclist was killed and another injured after being hit by a bus in Osmani Nagar Upazila of the district on Tuesday night.

The accident took place on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in Begumpur Bazar under Sadipur Union of the upazila at around 10 pm.

The deceased was identified as Biswajit Sutradhar, 27, son of Bikul Sutradhar, a resident of Lama Gavurtiki Village in the upazila.

Police and local sources said that a Cox's Bazar-bound bus of 'Ena Paribahan' hit a motorcycle in Begumpur Bazar area on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway at around 10 pm, which left two motorcycle riders seriously injured. 

The injured were then rescued by locals and taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Biswajit dead.

Police, however, seized both the vehicles, but the driver of the bus managed to flee the scene.

Sherpur Highway PS OC Parimal Chandra Dev confirmed the incident, adding that the body of the deceased was handed over to the family members after an autopsy.
