DASHMINA, PATUAKHALI, Sept 12: After 51 days of fighting with life, a bullet-hit mason of Dhaka's Shonir Akhra area died at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Monday night (Sept 9).

Bablu Mridha, 48, was the son of old Mafiz Ali  Mridha and Hanufa Begum couple of Kharija Betagi Village at Ward No. 7 of Betagi Sankipur Union in the upazila.

His family and education cost would run on his income as a mason in the area.

He would reside in a rented house in Shonir Akhra area with his elder son Abu Talib, a HSC first year student of Dania College in the same area.

His wife Sima Begum, 35, lives in village with younger son Mahim and parents of Bablu.  Among three brothers and one sister, Bablu was the second.

In the beginning, Bablu took part in the Student-Mass Movement with his son Talib.

On July 20 at about 7pm, he was bullet hit on his back in Shonir Akhra area.

Injured Bablu was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) by few protesters. His bullet was removed by operating at DMCH.
On August 5, he was referred to BGB Hospital at Pilkhana in a critical condition. His condition deteriorated again, and now he was sent to the CMH where he died on September 9.

After the autopsy at DMCH, on Tuesday (Sept 10) at 1:30pm his first Namaz-e-Janaza was held on the Central Shahid Minar premises in Dhaka; it was attended by Dhaka University's Chhatradal's former president and BNP National Standing Committee Member Md Hasan Mamun.

His body was brought to his village home at about 9pm on the day, wrapped with the national flag.

After the second janaza on local madrasa premises, his body was laid down in a family graveyard.

A visit to his home found a bewailing  atmosphere; his wife Sima Begum was crying; his old mother turned speechless; and his two-year-old son Mahim was seeing them crying.

His elder son Abu Talib, 17, said, "Our father has sacrificed his life in the anti-autocracy Student-Mass Movement. His part was spontaneous. He was our only shelter. We want justice of his killers."

Dashmina Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nafisa Naz Neera said, at the initiative of the upazila administration, a total of Tk 25,000 have been given including Tk 5,000 for funeral of Shahid Bablu Mridha and Tk 20,000 as financial assistance for his family; his name has been included in the list for future, and the list has been sent to the Chief Adviser's office.

The upazila administration will remain beside the families of the martyrs, the UNO added.
