THAKURGAON, Sept 14: The International Literacy Day-2024 was held in the district on September 8 in a befitting manner.

This Day is observed yearly in Thakurgaon. But nobody knows about present condition of the family of late Freedom Fighter Moksed Ali who  made his Kanchubari Krishtapur Village 100 per cent free of illiteracy.

His wife Jaheda Khatun, 70, is passing days in a miserable condition.

Moksed Ali's village is near Bangladesh Betar Kendra, seven kilometres away from the district town in the north.

A recent visit to his village found his old wife Jaheda Khatun drying green chilli on a broken tin sheet on her house yard.

While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, Jaheda Khatun said, "Since death of my husband, our life has been passing through many problems. I have no complaint. What I want is due dignity for my husband."

In 1972, Moksed Ali, then a college student, jumped into mass literacy movement. Later on, for his relentless effort, his Kanchubari Krishtapur Village was 100 per cent freed from illiteracy, which was the first instance in the country. All 700 men and women of his village learned to read and write. It was a silent revolution.

He was assisted by Mobarak Ali, Abdul Gafur Sarkar, Umeda Khatun, Toyoba Khatun and others of the village.

Then, FF Moksed Ali created sensation throughout the country. After the independence of Bangladesh, Kanchubari Krishtapur Village became known across the country as the illiteracy free village.

To see that success, the then president Abu Sayed Chowdhury and economist Dr Anisuir Rahman and other renowned persons visited the village. They awarded him Presidential Medal.

Bangabandhu had wanted to give him a job. But he regretted and said, "I will work for the people of my area."

He would live in a small home. He would cultivate limited land to run his family.

On September 11 in 2007, he died without treatment due to lack of money.

He was satisfied for his poor living with his wife, one son and two daughters.

At present, his family has been passing days in miserable condition.

His son Alamin said, "Our days are passing with promises of prominent people for years."

Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Md Mahbubur Rahman said, "We are trying to provide all types of assistance to the family of Moksed Ali.”
