WB to support Bangladesh banking reform: Salehuddin

Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed said, World Bank (WB) will help Bangladesh in rebuilding basic institutions and executing various reforms including reforms in the banking sector. 

He said this after a meeting with Martin Raiser, Vice President of South Asia Region of the World Bank at his secretariat on Thursday.

The Financial Adviser said, "I spoke with the vice president of the South Asia region of the organization and his team about various projects of the World Bank. It included budget support, energy sector cooperation, fertilizer import, food situation and post-flood cooperation.

Besides, Support for Rohingyas was also discussed. They have been very positive about all the suggestions we made on various subjects."

He said, "The reforms we have done so far in the banking sector will help us in export promotion. We have discussed about increasing investment in private sector, there are many types of problems in business and trade. They will help us," he said.

About the amount of possible fresh support from the Washington-based lending agency, the Finance Adviser denied revealing the amount.

World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Abdoulaye Seck, Operations Manager Gayle Martin, IFC Country Representative Martin Holtman, among others, were present.

Besides, Finance Division Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder and Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Shahriar Kader Siddiky were also present at the meeting.
