KHULNA, Sept 19: Newly appointed Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Commissioner Zulfiqar Ali Haider on Thursday said, the upcoming Durga Puja,  the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, will be celebrated in a festive manner.

"Special security measures will be taken before and after the Durga Puja in all Puja Mandaps, so that, any vested quarters could not commit any subversive activity to destroy communal harmony," he made the remark while exchanging views after his joining on September 8 with local journalists at the KMP headquarters.

As the chief guest of the view-exchange meeting, the new KMP commissioner remembered the martyrs Abu Sayed, Mugdho, and all the students and common people who sacrificed their lives in the anti-discrimination student and mass movement with deep sorrow and respect.

He urged the journalists to express their opinions about Khulna City's existing problems and sought suggestions in this regard.

Journalists discussed various crime issues of the city, existing problems in the law-and-order situation, drugs trading, selling, gambling, traffic system, 'Kishore gang' and requested law-enforcers to take appropriate legal measures.

They also gave assurance of remaining with all the efforts of KMP by maintaining professionalism.

Police will work neutrally and make friends with people as well, and there will be no more scope for working as enemies and opponents of people, he assured the journalists.

The KMP will begin drives against drug-peddlers, gamblers, 'Kishore gangs', terrorists, and illegal arms possessors, he maintained.

Replying series of questions, the KMP boss said, "I don't feel any pressure. Every citizen will get equal opportunity to the police and police stations; if anybody  faces discrimination, policing committee will be dissolved. Transactions of bribe in various sectors including appointment and transfer will be controlled. Policemen will face music who will commit such type of crimes."

Additional Police Commissioner Taslima Khatun, Deputy Commissioner (South) Sheikh Moniruzzaman, DC (DB) Md Anwar Hossain, and DC (City SB) M M Shakiluzzaman, among others, were present at the meeting.
