Thousands of shrimp enclosures washed away at Dumuria

DUMURIA, KHULNA, Sept 20: Two-day's mild-to-moderate rain submerged thousands of shrimp enclosures in Dumuria Upazila of the district, marooning people in low areas.

Due to illegal net barricade and filling of canals and beels in the upazila, the rain water recession was halted, submerging enclosures and floating away shrimps worth crores  of Taka. 

The devastating rain was triggered by disastrous weather on Tuesday. In different areas, educational institutions were inundated.  

Low-income and day-earning people are suffering.

Normal life has been standstill in 14 unions of the upazila. Cattle feed crisis has been created.

Vegetable farms of the enclosure banks are under water. Ground floors of many houses have been inundated. 

Victim locals blamed those people who filled water passing canals and drains by illegally grabbing, for the situation. They demanded action against these land grabbers.

According to meteorological office sources, in 24 hours, 146 milimetre (mm) rainfall was recorded in Khulna including 130mm from 1am to 6am.

Dumuria Upazila's Khornia Union, Tipnadunia, Gonalibamundiarbeel, Domrarbeel, Chachuriarbeel, Beelshinga, Chaherabeel, Beelkhukshirbeel, Beeltalia, Beeldakatia, and hundreds of beels and low areas in the south and west have been inundated; in these areas water entered residential houses, with the ground floor submerged.

All roads have been submerged, halting prayers to go to mosques.

Vans and easybikes cannot move on the flooded roads. 

People of 14 unions have fallen into untold sufferings.
