India set a daunting 515-run target for Bangladesh after centuries from Shubman Gill and Rishab Pant in the second innings of the first Test at M. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
India declared their innings at 287-4, leaving Bangladesh with a record-breaking chase. Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 119, securing his fifth Test century, while KL Rahul was on 22 when India declared shortly after lunch on Day 3.
Resuming on 81-3, Gill and Pant dominated the morning session, taking India’s lead past 500. The pair added 167 runs for the fourth wicket before Mehidy Hasan Miraz (2-103) dismissed Pant. Pant, playing his comeback Test after a near-fatal car crash, smashed 109 off 128 balls, including 13 boundaries and four sixes. It was his sixth Test century.
Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud each claimed a wicket as well, but India’s strong batting left Bangladesh facing a historic challenge. The highest successful chase in Test history remains 418 runs, meaning Bangladesh will need to rewrite the record books to secure victory in this match.
