Visitors on verge of massive defeat

Bangladesh are facing a daunting challenge as they need to chase 357 more runs with only six wickets in hand to avoid defeat against hosts India. 

At the end of Day 3 in the opening Test of the two-match series at Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Bangladesh managed to post 158 runs for the loss of four wickets while chasing a massive target of 515.

India declared their second innings at 287 for 4 after resuming from an overnight score of 81 for three. Both overnight batters Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant reached centuries. 

Pant was dismissed after scoring 109, while Gill remained unbeaten on 119. KL Rahul was batting on 22 when the declaration came. 

For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz took two wickets, whereas Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana shared one each.

In Bangladesh's second innings, they lost their top four batters while managing to reach 158. Openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam provided a good start with a 62-run partnership before Zakir was dismissed for 33. 

Shadman scored 35, but experienced batters Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam both were returned for 13 each. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto finally got some runs and remained unbeaten on 51, with Shakib Al Hasan batting on five at the close of play. 

Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets for India and Jasprit Bumrah claimed one.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first. India posted a strong total of 376 in their first innings led by Ravichandran Ashwin's 113, Ravindra Jadeja's 86 and Yashasvi Jaiswal's 56. 

Hasan Mahmud was the standout bowler for Bangladesh taking five wickets, while Taskin Ahmed picked up three, with Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz chipping in with one each.

In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for just 149 in their first innings with no significant individual scores apart from Shakib Al Hasan's 32 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz's unbeaten  27. 

Jasprit Bumrah led the Indian bowling attack claiming four wickets, while Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Jadeja shared the remaining wickets equally.
