GAIBANDHA, Sept 21:  The Global Day of Climate Action-2024 was observed in the district on Saturday with a call to reducing carbon emission in a bid to make the environment suitable for living.

The theme of the day is Fight for Fossil-Free Future.

Marking the Day, SKS Foundation, a Gaibandha base non-government organization, organized different programmes.

In the morning around 11 am, a human chain was held on the bank of the Brahmaputra River at Pepulia Char under Fulchhari Union of Fulchhari Upazila in the district under Community based Resilience Women's Empowerment and Action (CREA) project funded by Manusher Jonno Foundation.

Project Officer Sultana Bahar, members of Climate Action Group including adolescent girls spoke at the human chain that was moderated by Project Coordinator Lovely Khatun.

The speakers, in their speech, said, the climate change is being noticed in recent years with grave concern to biodiversity, food production and livelihood.

They also blamed the rich and industrially developed countries for climate change caused by excessive carbon emission.

Due to negative impacts caused by climate change, many countries including Bangladesh are being seriously affected though the rich countries which are responsible for climate change had given their commitment to providing financial assistance to the affected countries, but later, they moved from their position.

In this context, they urged all to give pressure to rich countries for reducing carbon emission in the days to come.

In this regard, they demanded reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using renewable energy and strengthening the position of women in energy policy.
