Commerce Ministry on Saturday approved export of 3,000 tonnes of hilsa to India on the occasion of Durga Puja.
The decision was taken after discussing the issue for several days.
Usually the Ministry of Commerce gives permission to export hilsa, only after getting recommendation of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
However, the Ministry of Livestock has been saying for a long time that hilsa cannot be exported to India.
This decision came following requests from several exporters.
Exporters have been asked to submit their applications to the Ministry of Commerce by 12 noon on September 24.
Applications should be addressed to the Deputy Secretary, Export-2 Branch, Room 127, Building-3, Bangladesh Secretariat.
No applications will be accepted after the deadline, though those who have already applied are not required to submit new applications.
Earlier, Bangladesh banned Hilsa export to India to ensure adequate hilsa supply in the local market.
After fall of Awami League government and the interim administration took the charge, discussions about Hilsa exports to India gained momentum on social media, particularly following comments made by Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhter.
On Aug 11, responding to reporters at the Secretariat, Farida said Hilsa could be exported only after meeting local demand.
She said, "We will ensure that the people of our country can buy hilsa at reasonable prices, and exporting without meeting local demand is not an option."
She also pledged to make hilsa more affordable to low-income groups.
Recently, media reported that hilsa shipments were seized during smuggling attempts across the border.
