Ruhul Amin has been removed from his position as khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Sunday.
A notification signed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs secretary Md Abu Bakar Siddique was issued in this regard on Sunday (September 22). It said Ruhul Amin has been formally removed following due process.
Ruhul Amin stopped coming to the mosque after the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government following the mass uprising on August 5.
In his absence, Islamic Foundation officials had been conducting Friday prayers.
Ruhul Amin along with his followers came to the mosque and tried to lead Friday prayers on September 20. But the worshipers inside the mosque expressed their unwillingness to pray behind him, leading to a confrontation between two groups, resulting in damage to the mosque and several people injured.
The ministry has condemned the incident, describing the attack and vandalism at the National Mosque as ‘highly undesirable, reprehensible, and a heinous crime’.
The government has vowed to take strict legal action against those responsible after a thorough investigation.
