Visitors concede massive defeat of 280 runs

Bangladesh suffered a crushing 280-run defeat against hosts India in the opening Test of the two-match series at Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as the visitors were bowled out for 234 runs in their second innings on Sunday. With this win, India secured a 1-0 lead in the series.

On the fourth day of the match, Bangladesh resumed their innings at 158 for four but collapsed before lunch. Chasing an imposing target of 515 runs, Bangladesh's innings folded at 234 after losing their last six wickets for just 40 runs.

Starting the day on five runs, Shakib Al Hasan added 25 before triggering a collapse. Liton Das followed Shakib with just one run, Mehidy Hasan Miraz managed eight. But captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was the standout performer, was dismissed for 82. Besides, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud contributed five and seven runs respectively.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers for India, claiming six wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja took three and Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with one.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss on September 19 and opted to bowl first. India posted a formidable total of 376 in their first innings, powered by Ravichandran Ashwin's 113, Ravindra Jadeja's 86 and Yashasvi Jaiswal's 56.

Hasan Mahmud was the leading wicket-taker for Bangladesh in that innings taking five wickets, while Taskin picked up three, with Nahid and Miraz each claiming one wicket.

In reply, Bangladesh struggled in their first innings and managed only 149 runs, with no significant individual contributions apart from Shakib Al Hasan's 32 and Miraz's unbeaten 27.

Jasprit Bumrah led India's bowling attack with four wickets, while Mohammad Siraj, Akash Deep and Jadeja shared the remaining wickets equally.

India, however, declared their second innings at 287 for four, with Shubman Gill scoring 119 and Rishabh Pant adding 109 runs.
For Bangladesh, Miraz took two wickets, while Taskin and Nahid claimed one each.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who scored a century in India's first innings and took six wickets in Bangladesh's second innings, was named Player of the Match.

The two sides will engage in the second and last match of the series at Green Park in Kanpur starting from September 27.
