Starting today (September 23), battery-run rickshaws and illegal, unregistered CNG-run auto-rickshaws will be banned in Sylhet city areas, ending a seven-day ultimatum issued by the traffic division of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).

In a notice issued on September 16, the SMP announced that all illegal vehicles would be prohibited from operating on major and key roads in Sylhet city starting September 23.

According to the notice signed by Mohammad Saiful Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of SMP, any violations of this ban will result in the confiscation of illegal vehicles and appropriate legal action against the offenders.

SMP sources said that from Monday, all CNG-run auto-rickshaws operating within the Sylhet metropolitan area must be marked with a yellow border on a green background.

Similarly, those operating outside the metropolitan area must be marked with a white border on a green background. No auto-rickshaw from outside the metropolitan area will be allowed to enter the city.     —UNB
