India eager to strengthen ties with Bangladesh, its parties: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday, "India is eager to further strengthen its relationship with Bangladesh."

Speaking with the reporters after an hour-long meeting with Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office he said, "India is keen on fostering greater goodwill and positivity also with the political parties in Bangladesh."

Mirza Fakhrul said that India wants to strengthen its relations with Bangladesh. Especially, after the change of government due to students' revolution the Indian High Commissioner contacted with the interim government. 

"They also want to strengthen relations with BNP. They are keen to work to bring this relationship closer," said Fakhrul. 

He said, "We raised the issues Bangladesh is facing with India, including the water-sharing dispute, border killings and the security issues which need resolution."

About the killings along the Bangladesh-India border Fakhrul said, "We conveyed the need to  stop border killings."
"We also discussed security concerns. They assured us they are vigilant and working towards resolving these problems as quickly as possible," Fakhrul said.

 This was the first meeting between Indian High Commissioner  and BNP leaders since former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's government fell on August 5.

Other BNP leaders present at the meeting included Standing Committee member Salauddin Ahmed, Vice Chairman Nitai Roy Chowdhury, and foreign affairs advisory committee member Shama Obaid.
