Former general secretary of National Press Club and daily Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamal Dutta has been sent to jail following remand in a case filed over the murder of Fazlu at Bhashantek in Dhaka during student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed on Monday passed the order as police produced Shyamal before the court after the end of his seven-day remand in the case.
His lawyer, Shyamal Kanti Sarkar, applied for bail on his behalf, but the prosecution opposed the plea.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court denied the bail request and ordered Dutta to be sent to jail.
Earlier on September 16, journalists Mozammel Haque Babu and Shyamal Dutta, along with two others, were detained by locals while allegedly attempting to cross into India illegally through the Dhobaura border in Mymensingh.
The locals later handed them over to the Dhobaura Police Station.
The next day, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah placed Shyamal Dutta on seven-day remand in the case.
According to the case documents, on August 5, following the fall of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina-led government, thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate.
Fazlu was killed during an attack and shooting allegedly carried out by Awami League activists at Mirpur-14 at around 7PM. His brother filed a case against 165 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina.
